Two Dell Rapids Junior Ambassador scholarships equaling $1,000 will be given to two high school applicants on Sunday evening during the Quarry Days festivities.
Each applicant submitted an application form to the Dell Rapids Chamber of Commerce explaining why each would make a good junior ambassador.
Three judges will award $600 to the first place winner and $400 to the second place winner.
Here is a brief synopsis of each of the applicants:
Robyn Everist
Robyn Everist, the daughter of Rob and Joette Everist, said she wants to represent Dell Rapids as a junior ambassador because she has lived here all her life and the community is a big part of who she is today.
“I have developed qualities such as trust, friendliness, determination and diligence because of the examples of the people around me in this town,” Everist said in her essay for her application. “In any store or business I walk into I’m greeted with a smile and a friendly hello from a hard working employee which is just awesome to see and experience.”
Everist has been involved in various extra curricular activities in school including volleyball, basketball, track, journalism, concert and pep bands, as well as oral interpretation, Quiz Bowl and St. Mary’s Youth Group.
She was also the sophomore class president and junior class representative for the student council.
She is also involved in community service that includes helping with the Tour de Kota, being active in her parish and youth group, and volunteering at Handi-Riders, where she helps handicapped people experience the chance to ride a horse.
Jocilyn Hansen
Jocilyn Hansen, the daughter of Chad and Jill Hansen, said she would like to be a junior ambassador because she feels it is important to give children a strong leader to look up to.
“Being Dell Rapids junior ambassador would give me the opportunity to be a role model for more kids in our community,” Hansen said in her essay for her application.
“I would use this experience to teach young people how to become a good leader; how to step out of their box.”
Hansen has been involved in various extra curricular activities including volleyball, track, softball, peer helpers, dance, band and marching band, as well as chorus, a member of the Echo staff and one-act play.
She is also involved in volunteering at the Children’s Care Hospital and School, the Banquet and is a Vacation Bible School volunteer leader, as well as an umpire in the Dell Rapids Little League softball and baseball.
Amanda Houska
Amanda Houska, the daughter of Dave and Sue Houska, said she would be proud to represent Dell Rapids as a junior ambassador and there are many things she could do for Dell Rapids and many ways she could help as a junior ambassador.
“I want to represent Dell Rapids as a junior ambassador so that I can set an example for the youth of Dell Rapids and teach them that hard work pays off and it is all worth it,” Houska said in her essay for application. “By graduating high school I learned that school is hard and it’s full of challenges. But I also learned that by doing my best and giving my all it gets easier and it is definitely worth it.”
Houska was involved in volleyball, softball, the newspaper and yearbook staff, drama, as well as being named as an All-State Chorus Alternate, All-State Chorus member and Girls State alternate.
For the past three years she has been involved at Safety Town teaching young children different aspects of safety and how to react to different situations.
She has been a volunteer coach, helped with various church functions, as well as various community service projects to help the school and church, young children and the elderly.
Courtney Kolbeck
Courtney Kolbeck, daughter of Tom and Pam Kolbeck, said she would be proud to represent Dell Rapids as a junior ambassador because it is a town that houses warm friendly people, has a unique character and reveals an All-American charm.
“Dell Rapids is “A little city with big attractions,” Kolbeck said in her essay for application. “If elected as a junior ambassador, one major aspect I would highlight about the community is the breath taking landscapes. We have a very unique and wonderful resource that provides character to our community; our pink rock.”
Kolbeck was involved in basketball, volleyball, quiz bowl, peer helpers, as well as a class officer, Young Governor’s Luncheon representative, Girls State representative and Youth Business Adventure representative.
She has been involved in volunteering at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, assisted in filling in as a lector, as well as volunteering and serving the church by raking leaves, making decorations for the nursing homes and assisting with younger grade youth retreats.
