Teeners head to Flandreau
I-29 Tourney brings two Dells squads

The two local “B” Teener teams took on the I-29 League Tourney June 5-10, with the Dells (Mogen) team taking second place for the week.
Out of the 22 teams competing in the Flandreau-based event, the DR-M team and Dells (Kerzman) squads both took on opponents throughout the week. The ultimate winning team was Humboldt/Hartford, which took out the 4-0 DR-M squad, 10-7, in the final round June 10.
June 8 in Flandreau brought the DR-M team the Harrisburg Gold as opponents, resulting in a 17-8 victory for the Dells boys. After two innings, the team’s starting pitcher Ty Hoglund kicked things off to a 13-0 lead. Harrisburg made a comeback, though, picking up eight runs in the third off of three relief pitchers.
Nate McKee served up five strikeouts of the final six Harrisburg hitters, effectively propelling Dells to the win in the round.
Brett Mogen picked up three hits and three RBI in the round, while Mason Peter landed a home run, a single and three RBI. The 14-hit tally was also aided by McKee’s two hits.
The Canistota/Salem match for the DR-M schedule proved a more one-sided round for Dell Rapids, as the boys outdid their opponents, 10-1. Mogen let two hits through and one unearned run during the match-up, pitching three innings. Mogen additionally led with eight strikeouts. Elijah Story proved most effective on offense, connecting with two singles.
The Mogen-coached boys continued onto a match-up with the Madison White, resulted in a tight 5-4 victory. Both teams were as of then undefeated, 3-0 squads.
The Dells boys fought from behind to advance to the finals in the tournament. Hoglund set the bar, pitching four shutout winnings to push for the win. Five hits came through, and 10 strikeouts marked the five innings pitched.
Finally, the Humboldt/Hartford championship game was a tight one, with the Dells boys coming up short, 10-7. Ross Wiebeng led the Dells offensive, managing two hits, while Josh Parrot took one single and two RBI. Mogen led off the pitching game for four innings before relief pitchers McKee and Hoglund stepped in.
The DR-M team sits at 5-1 for the season and will play tonight in Dell Rapids versus the Madison Red at 7 p.m.
The DR-K team faced Harrisburg off the bat, winning 10-5, before the Friday round pitted them against Salem for a 4-2 loss. The Saturday rounds resulted in a 12-6 loss to Garretson and a 9-0 loss to Humboldt during the Flandreau-based tourney.
