The 12U VFW State Tournament, held July 20-22 in Sioux Falls brought Dell Rapids to play in the Class A bracket to a second-place finish.

The Dell Rapids boys played Friday against round one team Milbank, losing 5-4, but came back the next morning, beating Harrisburg 10-0.

Saturday afternoon brought additional play for the Dells boys, who defeated Elk Point/Jefferson 13-0, propelling the squad to the Sunday championship round.

On July 22, the local boys faced Bon Homme, the No. 2 seed to Dells’ No. 3, winning 8-5 in seven innings.

Finally, Dell Rapids played Madison in the championship game of the tourney, ending the day with a 6-0 loss to the opponents.

Coaches Greg Gullickson, Mike Ellingson and Danny Miller were happy with the boys’ performance at the tournament. “(We coaches) were really proud of how the kids played over the weekend,” Ellingson said.
