The Baltic Bulldogs had no answer for Sioux Falls Christian’s Hayley McCarron on Thursday night in the girls District 6A Tournament at Tea Area High School.
McCarron scored 12 of her game-high 23 points in the first quarter, and the Chargers held on to defeat the Bulldogs 59-47 in advancing to the Region 3A final against Madison on Thursday at 8 p.m. in Harrisburg.
The Bulldogs took an early 5-1 lead but the Chargers went on an 18-0 run to build a 14-point lead.
But Baltic didn’t fade. At the start of the second quarter trailing 17-5, the Bulldogs made adjustments to slow the Chargers.
They implemented a box-and-one defense with Baltic’s Abby Weinzell shadowing the Charger Hayley McCarron every time down the floor.
Baltic battled back to take the lead with 3:35 to play in the third.
Morgan Forsch’s 3-pointer gave the Bulldogs a 30-28 lead, their first since it was 5-3 in the game’s opening minutes. Forsch finished the night with 23 points, including four from behind the arc.
“We did a good job with that,” Baltic coach Peter Egstad said of the Bulldogs’ box-and-one effort against McCarron. “That was in our back pocket and we knew we could go to it if we had to. We were hoping that we wouldn’t have to, but she’s a great player.”
Baltic’s lead at 30-28 was short lived, however, with Christian regaining the lead moments later.
The Bulldogs finished the year at 16-6.
