The Dell Rapids Quarriers struggled in its 2013 football season debut and found mustering any offense early on to be a challenge against the No. 4-ranked Madison Bulldogs.
By the time they clicked, it was too late and the Quarriers fell 39-12 in the season opener Friday night in Madison.
In the first half, Dell Rapids failed to convert a fake punt on their first possession, and didn’t complete a first down on its next three possessions.
It wasn’t until quarterback Tanner Solberg found Zach White in the corner of the end zone for a 17-yard touchdown with 1:23 left in the first half that Dell Rapids had generated any success.
“We got beat,” Quarriers coach Steve Hansen said. “Madison was the better team tonight, by far. We learned we’ve got to get better.”
Overall, the Bulldogs outgained the Quarriers, 405-235.
Hansen said the Quarriers were not surprised by Madison’s ability.
“Even before this game, we knew Madison was going to be one of the best teams in the state,” he said. “You look at the seniors they brought back and the skill guys they have, they’re certainly a strong team.”
