Cardinals stride up rankings with win in Freeman

Four top-20 finishes by the Cardinal boys cross country team had St. Mary cruising to a championship in Freeman Wednesday.
Coupling the boys team’s 16-point, first place finish, was a first place individual finish for Mitch Roemen. The Cardinal runner’s time of 17:56 was the best of any athlete at the meet.
“Great win for our program, and definitely something we can build off of,” said Cody Schilling, Cardinal head coach.
St. Mary’s Jared Scholten was the second to cross the finish line. He recorded a time of 18:14.
Ethan Schmidt medaled with a time of 19:52 – 14th place, and Matt Farmer’s time of 20:52 was good enough for 19th place.
The girls finished in fifth place as a team in Freeman with 48 points.
Anna Wolles recorded the best time of any Cardinal in the girls field – 17:13 – and finished fifth overall.
St. Mary’s Cassie Geraets rounded out the field’s top-20 with a time of 18:58.
Thursday, Sept. 12, St. Mary runners were in DeSmet where the boys finished second as a team.
In a field of 46 competitors, Roemen again lead the Cardinal runners with a fifth place finish – 18:27.
Farmer finished in 10th place with a time of 19:26. Schmidt placed 13th with a time of 19:39.
In a field of 51 runners, Wolles earned a bronze medal with a third-place, 16:28 finish.
Geraets placed 10th with a time of 17:45.
