Nichols' 3-score effort lifts Dells past Tanagers

The DakotaDome is like a second home for the Quarriers, who’ve won three consecutive state championships on the Vermillion football field. The dome’s good mojo was again with third-ranked Dell Rapids Thursday night as the Quarriers throttled the Tanagers 40-10 in the last regular season contest of 2013.
The Quarriers didn’t waste anytime, and found the end zone immediately - just 33 seconds ticked off the clock. The score set a first half theme. On their next possession the Dell Rapids boys struck for seven points. It took three plays.
Dell Rapids led 34-0 at halftime.
Brett Nichols had five carries for 124 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Quarriers,who finished the regular season with at 6-2. Nichols scored on runs of 50, 39 and 34 yards.
Riley Schmidt also chipped in for the reigning Class 11A champs, picking up 109 yards on 10 carries. He scored twice – a 49-yard rush and a 23-yard catch.
Jacob Huewe had 41 yards rushing and a score.
Quarterback Tanner Solberg had 49 yards passing.
The win for the Quarriers earned them a home playoff game against Sisseton Tuesday night.
