Horstmeyer's tradition carried on by ESA

With the passing of Halloween, local good Samaritans are gearing up for another round of Christmas philanthropy. “Christmas for Our Kids,” a long standing community project started by the late Sue Horstmeyer. Now spearheaded by the Dell Rapids ESA chapter, the project seeks to gather gifts for children that might otherwise go without during the holiday season.
Last year, the ESA deliver gifts to 81 children from 30 families in the Dell Rapids area.
Once again, people are encouraged to nominate families through anonymous and self referrals.
“We may all know a family in our community that is going through tough times and could use our help to provide those extras over the holidays,” said Brenda O’Hara, project coordinator for the Dell Rapids ESA.
Individuals and groups who adopt a child or family will be anonymously matched up with a child or family.
There will be two angel trees set up with specific gift requests at Avera Dells Area Hospital and First National Bank. Stop in and take an angel tag from the tree, and return the unwrapped gift with the tag attached under the tree.
Monetary donations can be dropped off or mailed to “Christmas for Our Kids”, First National Bank, 312 E. 4th Street, Dell Rapids, S.D. 57022.
ESA hopes to have all donations collected by Dec. 15.
