A quiet first half in the Aberdeen Roncalli-Dell Rapids match up at the Parkston Classic Saturday turned into a shootout late as the Lady Quarriers held on for a 49-45 victory.
Both teams struggled to produce points early, but Dell Rapids mustered an 18-8 advantage by halftime.
Coach Jeff Dvorak said it was a day of learning for this year’s Lady Quarriers team.
“Little mistakes made early in the game come back to haunt you,” he said. “We had at least six easy shots that we missed in the first half that if we make (them), Roncalli would've been done. But we missed, they hung around and played a strong second half to give themselves a shot to win.”
Clutch free-throw shooting late in the game sealed the win for the Lady Quarriers.
“Free throws are huge,” Dvorak said. “Although our overall percent wasn't great, we hit eight big ones in the fourth to close the game out.”
Dell Rapids shot 37 percent from the field and 52 percent from the stripe, while outrebounding Aberdeen Roncalli 26-16.
Mikaela Stofferahn led the Lady Quarriers offense with 15 points, while also grabbing 10 rebounds. Brittany Kludt had nine points and six rebounds.
The win brings the Lady Quarriers’ record to 3-1.
