Five Quarrier wrestlers are headed to the South Dakota State A Wrestling Tournament after placing at the Region 1A Tournament Saturday in Watertown.
Dell Rapids’ 220-pounder Leon Maxwell, class A’s top wrestler in the weight class, earned the region championship while picking up pin number 32 on the year, a new school record.
In the first round, Maxwell pinned Roosevelt’s David Mulbah in a minute and 30 seconds. The second round also ended with a pin. This time Maxwell earned his pin against Watertown’s Cole Jurgens 54 seconds into the second period. In the championship match, Maxwell pinned Brooking’s Eddie Miller in 30 seconds.
The pin against Miller broke the school record, which was also held by Maxwell.
Dell Rapids’ Jacob Habeger took third place in the 285-pound division. Brookings’ Aaron Eggebrecht was Habeger’s first victim of the day. Habeger pinned Eggebrecht after one minute and 52 seconds of wrestling. In the second round, West Central’s Layne Krier pinned Habeger in three minutes and 54 seconds. Hebeger bounced back with a 3-0 decision win over Roosevelt’s Alex Capell.
The third place match was a chance at redemption for Eggebrecht, but Habeger again pinned the Brookings wrestlers, though it took about 90 seconds longer.
Dell Rapids wrestlers Scott Warwick (113), Austin Eulberg (160) and Brock Reinhiller (170) also punched their tickets to the state meet with fourth place finishes.
The Quarriers finished sixth as a team with 71.5 points. Roosevelt won the region tournament with 196.
