The Lady Quarriers made a quick exit from the Region 3A Tournament in Tea last week when their youth and inexperience again had them in an early hole.
Dell Rapids, the region’s top-seeded team, fell in a 53-40 upset against Madison.
A poor first quarter had Dell Rapids on its heels all game long. Within the first few minutes of the game, the Lady Quarriers turned the ball over five times, were 0 for 5 from the field and made just one of eight free throws. Madison led 19-2 after the first eight minutes of play.
“Our youth and inexperience was never so obvious as the first quarter tonight. We were down (by 17) and ... we just don't have the offensive firepower to fight out of that type of hole,” said Jeff Dvorak, Dell Rapids head coach.
On the night, Dell Rapids shot 24 percent from the field, committed 13 turnovers and was outrebounded 37-21.
Ariel Hoffman led the Lady Quarriers with 12 points, and Mikaela Stofferahn added nine points and four rebounds.
“The girls fought hard to get back into the game in the second half, and for that we are very proud of them,” Dvorak said. “Hopefully, this lesson will stick with us as we think ahead to next year.”
The Lady Quarriers finish their season with a 7-14 mark.
