Alice's Attic: Fishing tale lives on at Turtle Lake

Turtle Lake Resort is small, but it was a fun place for Dave, Scott and me to take a week's holiday. Our little Manchester terrier, Cocoa, never missed a trip either. A lot of years have passed since then, but those great memories always stay with us.
Turtle Lake is a cozy lake located about 20 miles east from Fergus Falls, Minn. The resort had several cabins, three old, ugly, green colored ones and a couple that were newer. They were all named for birds. Our favorite was one of the old ones named the Wren, so we always had that one reserved, close to the store and a few feet from the lake.
Whenever we headed for the boat hoping for a good day of fishing, Cocoa was the first one in. She sat at the bow, ears flying out, and thinking she was our guide - or being the first to play the scene from "Titanic!"
Every day we were lucky to catch bass, bluegill and "sunnies", which made for a delicious meal! One early evening, Scott saw a big frog jumping on our screen door, trying to catch mosquitoes.
"That is a good sign," he said just before grabbing it. He rushed to the dock, put the frog on his hook, cast out, then, in a few minutes he had a big strike!
It was the walleye, weighing 9 pounds!
Scott, out of excitement, was running and screaming. We thought that he had hooked himself – of course, I would think that. He ran to the wrong cabin, waking all the neighbors, all coming out to see what was happening. After a long time of admiration, Dave cleaned it for our next day's dinner!
The owner of the store wanted the head, which is on a plaque, and still hanging on their wall.
